Kona Sharwil Avocado

We are proud to offer the Kona Sharwil for distribution in Hawaii.

History / Details:

The Sharwil Avocado was initially propagated in Redland Bay, Australia by Frank Sharpe in 1951. The property where the original seedling was located was later purchased by James Wilson. The name ‘Sharwil’ was derived by combining the last names of Frank Sharpe (Shar-) and James Wilson (-Wil). “Are Sharwil and Kona Sharwil the same cultivar?” The answer is yes, they are the same cultivar. The addition of ‘Kona’ to the name is because Sharwil avocados are very popular to grow in Hawaii, specifically in the Kona region of the Big Island of Hawaii.
The Kona Sharwil Avocados are large beautiful trees, providing cool shade and abundant fruit. The Kona Sharwil is popular with commercial growers and has a long and heavy bearing season throughout the months of October to May. We don’t pick our avocados until an order is placed, they stay ripe and do not soften on the tree. This allows us to provide the best possible fruit available. Sharwil is an amazingly consistent bearer and provides a consistent supply of fruit for months on end.

Distinguishing characteristics of the Sharwil avocado include its size, shape, and color. It weighs between 8 and 16 oz, making it a slightly smaller variety. However, the pit size is usually described as medium-small. As a result of this, 73% of this variety is edible. The fruit is usually rounded or slightly pear-shaped, high oil content, and has a green rough skin. The skin is of medium thickness this provides ample protection during distribution. The thicker skin allows it to peel very easily and protects the fruit from bruising. The color of a Sharwil avocado stays green when ripe and has a dull grayish-blue tinge to it.
What’s particularly notable about Sharwil is its remarkably high oil content, ranging from 15% to 25%, guacamole enthusiasts and chiefs alike find this high oil content preferable. In terms of flavor, Sharwil offers a rich, nutty taste that is dense and full-bodied. I believe that Sharwil’s creamier texture and overall robust flavor is better than Hass. Honestly, there’s no doubt in my mind that Sharwil is a top-shelf avocado.

Occasionally throughout the year we have other varieties available, but they are on a very limited basis and always bring a premium. Those varieties include Green Gold, Kahalu’u, Linda, Malama, San Miguel and Yamagata. If you are interested in specialty varieties, please inquire early.
